The Lulu project began in May 2011 at HQ studios in Northern California, with Lou’s lyrics as the starting point, it is a musical collaboration between Lou Reed and Metallica. The Telegraph awarded Lulu three stars out of five, stating that while the album was "grueling, even by latter Lou Reed standards," the sense of "unrestrained folly" and sheer lack of commercialism made the album feel "important".
There's an insurmountable disjunction between the sound of Metallica doing their nut in the background and Reed's papery old voice rambling away upfront. “Lulu” was inspired by German expressionist writer Frank Wedekind’s plays “Earth Spirit” and “Pandora’s Box,” which tell a story of a young abused dancer’s life and relationships and are now collectively known as the “Lulu Plays.” Since their publication in the early 1900′s, the plays have been the inspiration for a silent film (“Pandora’s Box,” 1929), an opera, and countless other creative endeavors.
The LULU album was produced by Lou Reed, Metallica, Hal Wilner, & Greg Fidelman and mixed by Greg Fidelman. "We were psyched to be thrown into a situation with no specific structure," says Ulrich in the album's press release. "We were reinventing the wheel! We've tried over the years in certain instrumental pieces to get as far out there as possible, but nothing we'd ever done prepared us for where this went." But "out there" it is not. Reed describes the Lulu album as follows: "A set of extended songs inspired by German expressionist Frank Wedekind's early 20th century plays Earth Spirit and Pandora's Box (much admired by Freud). Lou Reed was an obvious choice, according to Lars Ulrich, because he's "kind of a solo version of Metallica.
"We had to bring 'Lulu' to life in a sophisticated way, using rock," Reed says. Then again, maybe we shouldn't worry? This is going to be "the best thing done by anyone, ever" -- according to Lou Reed, anyway -- so it might as well be four hours long. When was the last time Lord Reed of the Insects gave two hoots about what the listener thought? Together, Metallica and Lou become Metallouca, and Metallouca is, at this point, universally considered to be pure goat shit. I think it’s safe to say that. Chuck Klosterman said it best: "We don't live in a vacuum. We live on Earth.
Release on October 31, with the North American release following a day later on November 1. "We were very interested in working with Lou." James Hetfield said. The combination of two of rock’s most formidably humourless acts provokes sniggers on “Little Dog”, intended by Reed as a dissection of dog-eat-dog masculine carnality, on which he instead comes across as Satan grumpily judging Crufts. In fact, the thrash band and the dark prince have collaborated before. They met at the 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame anniversary concert where the foursome backed Lou on Velvet Underground touchstones like Sweet Jane. Metallica are metal's mega band and Reed is one of the most revered rebels in music, so they can both do what ever the hell they like. At no point does the lumbering, stilted tones of Lou Reed’s vocal delivery ever feel in sync with Metallica’s boisterous backing band pretence.
So it’s no surprise that a chance collaboration during a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame anniversary concert has now resulted in a full-length album featuring both entities. Metallica will perform tracks from 'Lulu' with Reed on November 8 on Later… With Jools Holland. Now, he can’t even mumble-talk his way through the lyrics with any form of emotion, inflection, or even mere intelligibility. METALLICA flew to the UAE from New York, where the band attended a listening party for its joint album with Lou Reed, called "Lulu", which arrives next Tuesday (November 1).
